“The podcast that loves clothes but hates capitalism.” I was initially drawn to this podcast because of my love of secondhand shopping, but ended up being amazed at the breadth of behind-the-scenes dirt about the fashion industry. The host, Amanda Lee McCarty, worked in fast fashion for years, and she’s a phenomenal storyteller and educator. This podcast has permanently changed the way I shop.
Jennifer Wang’s TikTok account
A great pairing with the Clotheshorse podcast is this fast-growing TikTok account of Jennifer Wang, a Canadian pharmacist who shares her in-depth knowledge of tailoring and garments to stop you from getting scammed when buying clothes. She’s honest, unafraid to piss off brands, and provides truly useful advice. She also has a YouTube channel.
Love Has Won: The Cult of Mother God (Documentary)
Like most people with a pulse, I am obsessed with cult content and think that the subject matter is a great window into how culture is changing. This documentary is different from so many cult stories and tells a unique tale of a leader whose power and influence ultimately worked against them. Trust me on this one.
Floral Evolution by Catherine Foxwell (Book)
I've gotten really into floral arranging, a hobby heavily subsidized by the unbelievable discounts I get on flowers by going to the flower vendors at the farmers market 5 minutes before close time. Because they’re just looking to offload whatever’s left over, I usually get about a 50-75% discount. For a long time, I was experimenting with arrangements using the guidance of talented florists on TikTok, but things really started to click when I bought this fantastic book. Very novice-friendly. I got a secondhand copy off of Amazon.
Britney Spears’ Memoir (Audiobook version)
However harrowing you think Britney’s behind-the-scenes story might be, I promise you the truth is far more ominous and terrifying. It’s a Southern Gothic made even better when brought to life in audiobook form by Michelle Williams. A lesson in empathy, which was in (extra) short supply during Britney's rise to fame.
I have a terrible case of plantar fasciitis, which basically means that my feet hurt 24/7, a condition that is best treated with physio (duh) but mostly improved through massage. I’ve started using this when I’m working or watching TV, and it’s the only thing that’s made a difference in my day-to-day pain levels.
